It can a daunting prospect if you think the clutch might be going on your car as it can be a labour intensive and expensive job, not to mention dangerous if it were to go seemingly without warning. Fortunately, there are a few things you can look out for that can indicate your clutch may need looking at.

Slipping
People often describe the clutch as ‘slipping’, this may feel as though the clutch is not fully engaging or disengaging and is likely to be more noticeable when the engine is having to work harder, such as pulling away, going uphill or overtaking. When the clutch is slipping the engine will tend to over rev without the vehicle going any faster/further.

Noise and Jerking
Although a clutch will inevitably wear down over time, due to normal wear and tear, noise from the clutch and jerking motions can mean the clutch is failing prematurely. This can sometimes be caused by oil contamination from various sources and when oil contaminates the clutch facings it can cause jerkiness when the clutch is engaged.

Burning Smell
If a driver ‘rides’ the clutch or has an aggressive driving style, this can cause the clutch to become too hot, the facings may begin to burn giving off an unpleasant odour. If the clutch has no chance to cool down, it may be ruined.

A few other tell-tale signs that your clutch may need checking are; difficulty changing gears, rattling or grinding noises when changing gear, noticeable lack of speed even when revving the engine and engine revving erratically.
